We had our first experience with *girls* this past weekend. We spent the weekend at the local resort, where the boys insisted on spending as much time as they could in the pool. This wouldn’t have normally been a problem, it is April in Texas. But as the fates would have it, it was misty-raining, cool, and generally yucky. No one, and I mean NO ONE, was at the pool. Except us.
Those are two little boy heads sticking out of the water. Squint, they are there. Next to the empty rafts, empty beach, empty hot tub (empty hot tub!)
Though the pool didn’t stay empty for long. Soon Jett and Carlos were joined by Abby. Another first grader. Who thought Jett was really cool. And then Jett and Abby became super-heroes, and Carlos became left out. Jett and Abby moved their game to the deeper part of the pool, and Carlos moved his dejected little self to his mommy’s side.
It was a small glimpse into our future. I like to think of it as a practice parenting moment. This time, as soon as Jett’s lips were really blue and he was shaking from the cold, he was happy to rejoin Carlos and I on the warm, dry land. And all became right in the boys’ universe again. And I got a reprieve to figure out what my response should be next time. When the stakes will be a little bit higher.
