Corn

Wednesday is grocery store flyer day, and I’m checking the ads for the sales. And they have listed local corn 6 ears for $1. That price isn’t even that unusual, and I feel so sorry for the corn farmers.

Corn is an easy crop to grow, but each plant only yields one ear of corn. What?? Did you know that? AND you have to plant more than one plant so they can cross-pollinate. AND it takes forever for the stupid ears to ripen AND the ants really like to get in there and eat the ears.

Luckily, none of my kids like corn. J and I can hog the two ears that are growing, and hope that no one else in the family ever develops a taste for home-grown corn!

I wouldn’t worry too much about them, corn is one of the most heavily subsidized industries out there. I don’t know how it works for the small organic independent farmer but then, I don’t think their corn is that inexpensive…

How about we mix your 2 ears of corn with my 3 pods of Okra and we might just have enough hash for a family of. . . well, one, two if they ate a late lunch!
